Home Appliance Maintenance Tips

Appliance Maintenance

When your washer, stove, fridge, or other appliance is brand new, you most likely won’t think twice about problems or repairs. It is important, however, to remember that every appliance consists of several working parts. These parts experience wear and tear on a regular basis and this means that they will not last forever. You might not be able to prevent wear and tear but you can perform regular maintenance in order to keep this wear to a minimum. Here are a few maintenance tips you can use to keep your household appliances in top shape.

When one of your appliances breaks, it is often due to a faulty part. What many do not realize is that dirt can also be to blame. If your appliances are not cleaned on a regular basis, the grime can make them work that much harder and appliance failure is around the corner. Dirt likes to hide in different areas of different appliances and here are some important tips to keep household appliances in top condition:

Fridge and Freezer

The condenser coils are located on the back of your fridge and freezer. You should carefully move your fridge or freezer just enough to allow access. Use a condenser brush to clean the coils quickly and safely. Don’t forget to unplug your fridge or freezer before you begin cleaning. Do not use sharp objects since this could cause serious damage. If you scrape the paint, it can allow rust to form. Your freezer also needs to be defrosted on a regular basis. Again, you should not use sharp objects or you could damage your freezer.

Oven and Stove

If your oven has a self-cleaning feature, you can use it from time to time. That said, it’s often best to do the job yourself. You can use steam and even fresh lemon to loosen grime. If you plan on using stronger cleaning detergents, make sure that your kitchen is properly ventilated. As for your stove, it’s easiest to clean almost immediately after cooking. Wait for your stove to cool down before cleaning. If you allow dirt and spills to build up, it will be that much more difficult to clean.

Washer and Dryer

Check the lint traps on your washer and dryer regularly. If the trap becomes full on your washer, it can result in particles ending up in various other parts of your washer or the drainage pipes can get blocked. As for your dryer, you should check the lint trap before every load. Failing to clean the lint trap on your dryer can increase the risk of fire and cause serious damage to your dryer.
